How to clean RAM and make PC faster

Clearing your PC's RAM can be useful to make your computer faster. This component directly influences the performance of the machine, since it is responsible to quickly access the data of the storage disk, besides opening programs and installed software. Thus, the greater the amount of RAM installed, the better the computer performance tends to be.

Check out tips to make your computer faster without installing anything

1. Check the installed memory

First, it is important to know the amount of memory installed on your system to find out if your computer meets the minimum requirements for running the OS. 32-bit versions of Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 require at least 1 GB of RAM to run. However, the recommended volume is 2 GB, while the maximum RAM that the system will be able to recognize is 3 GB.

As for 64-bit systems, the minimum and recommended RAM volumes double, going to 2 GB and 4 GB respectively. In this case, the maximum amount of memory supported is quite high. It is common to find motherboards that recognize up to 128GB. In the case of newer versions of macOS, the minimum requirements are also in the 2GB range, as well as the most common Linux distributions (Mint and Ubuntu). To be sure of these numbers, simply access the system information on your PC.

2. Restart your computer

Whenever you restart your computer, all data allocated in RAM is erased. This is a common feature as these components randomly access information according to user demand. That way, restarting the computer causes RAM to return to its cleanest state.

3. Check the programs that start with the system

One of the factors that compromise the performance of RAM in computers are the programs that begin their execution next to the system. Many of them are essential, such as antivirus software. However, it is common for programs that are not used at each PC access to consume part of the memory. In this case, the best thing to do is to tweak those softwares and let only the essential services run when you log on to the system.

One way to visualize which programs are using the RAM of your PC or which ones start next to the system is through the Windows Task Manager, which can be accessed through the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys. This will allow you to shut down the programs and free the memory of your system for other tasks. In the case of Linux, it is called System Monitor and can be accessed by the same key combination. In Mac OS, to terminate a program, simply press Command + Option + Esc.

4. Uninstall what you do not need

Although this tip seems obvious, we do not always use all the programs that are installed on the computer. In this case, the Task Manager can be useful for monitoring software that is no longer used, but continues to run, and can impact your PC's performance. In addition, you can find out which programs make very high use of RAM and look for more efficient alternatives.

5. Be consistent with the amount of RAM

As mentioned, RAM memories help the system run more than one software simultaneously. However, if your computer has a small amount of memory, a measure that can be effective is to run fewer programs at the same time. Open several browser tabs, a music player, social application and even expect the system to run the antivirus may be too much to ask for the hardware, especially when the number of installed memory is limited.

Avoid performing multiple tasks at the same time on your PC or notebook

6. Download an optimization software

Some programs can monitor RAM usage, as well as other aspects of the system, and introduce measures to improve resource use, such as stopping the execution of unused programs, deleting obsolete records, and even deleting unnecessary files. There are several free programs to optimize RAM, such as RAMBooster and Wise Memory Optimizer.

7. ReadyBoost can be an alternative in Windows

Users of Microsoft operating systems can use USB devices, such as thumb drives, memory cards, and external hard drives, to aid RAM. The feature, called ReadyBoost, creates a cache space on these devices, also reducing the amount of data allocated directly in RAM. The performance gain obtained is not as substantial, but may be one. Remember that devices must have at least 256 MB of storage and must be formatted in FAT 32.

After these measures, if you still have problems with your computer's RAM, it may be worth considering the investment in more memory. To do this, make sure your motherboard still has spaces available for allocating new devices and find out the RAM numbers indicated for your operating system.
