Skype may be targeted by hackers on the PC; know how to protect yourself

Skype for PC has a newly discovered vulnerability that puts the user's files at risk. Failure in the program's update mechanism may allow a hacker to access the victim's machine and take control of the system. Microsoft has already confirmed the security breach, but has not provided for a patch package to arrive.

In the meantime, the best option to continue using the video-calling app is to opt for the version available from the Microsoft Store, the official Windows 10 store. Here's how to protect yourself from the problem and avoid being hacked.

Skype crash puts user data at risk in Windows

When searching for an update on Microsoft servers, Skype uses a tool that is vulnerable to DLL hijacking (DLL hijacking). Unprotected communication between the program and the Windows DLL library allows infiltration of an external code by the attacker, freeing up administrator access to a potential hacker relatively easily.

Skype available at the Microsoft Store is safer because it uses a controlled means of updates that does not make way for hackers. However, this version can only be installed on computers running Windows 10. If your PC is still equipped with an older variant of the operating system, the recommendation is to uninstall Skype until a fix update arrives.

Windows 10 PCs may, however, also have the vulnerable version installed. If this happens, you must remove the program from your computer and use the version of the app distributed by the store exclusively to stay safe.
