Tips to Reduce Internet Consumption in WhatsApp

WhatsApp can consume a considerable amount of data from your mobile internet plan. This is mainly due to the amount of photos and videos that are shared by the application in chat groups. By default, the messenger comes configured to automatically download such content in the background, meaning the app does not even have to be open to consume your franchise. Some settings can be modified in the Android and iPhone (iOS) versions so that the messenger consumes less mobile data.

Here's a compilation of three simple tips to reduce the use of mobile data by WhatsApp. The procedures were performed on an iPhone 8 with iOS 12 and a Moto E4 with Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Disable automatic download

Automatic downloading of photos and videos is undoubtedly the largest source of WhatsApp data consumption. Fortunately, you can either disable the feature entirely or allow it to download only when your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

On Android, the function can be adjusted in the messenger settings → "Data and storage" → "Automatic download" → "When using data network". Uncheck all the options and tap "OK".

Disabling automatic media download

In the WhatsApp version for iPhone, go to "Settings" → "Data Usage and Storage" → "Photos" and select the "Never" or "Wi-Fi" option. Do the same for the other items - videos, audios, and documents.

Disable non-Wi-Fi backups

WhatsApp can backup your conversations using 3G or 4G. This ensures greater security for messages if your cell phone is lost or stolen. On the other hand, the feature can consume a significant amount of data, especially if you usually send or receive many photos.

You can configure WhatsApp to use only the Wi-Fi connection to back up. On Android, the setting is in the messenger settings → "Conversations" → "Back up conversations" → "Back up to". Finally, just select "Wi-Fi".

Configuring WhatsApp Backup

On the iPhone, this setting should be made in the iOS Settings app. Go to "Mobile" → scroll to the end and deactivate "iCloud Drive". Note that this also affects other applications that use Apple's storage service to save files.

Reduce the quality of calls

If you use WhatsApp to make or receive calls, you can reduce call quality to save data. Only calls made through the mobile network will be affected. If your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the maximum quality will be maintained.

To do this, go to the WhatsApp settings → open "Data and storage" → scroll to the end and enable the "Reduce data usage" option.

On the iPhone, go to "Settings" → "Use Data and Storage" and activate the "Reduce Data Usage" item.
