Google Maps: Finding the Distance Between Cities

Google Maps can be used to find the distance between two cities. There are two ways to use the traffic app to do the measurement: charting a car route or using the measurement tool, which tells the distance in a straight line - useful for estimating flight time, for example. The Google feature promises to help you plan trips or even day-to-day travel and is available in the free app for Android and iPhone (iOS) phones.

In the following tutorial, check out how to measure the distance between two places on Google Maps from your mobile phone and from your computer. On the mobile, the procedure was performed on a Moto E4 with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, but the tips are also valid for users of Apple devices.

On the cellphone

Step 1. Open Google Maps and tap "Go" in the lower right corner of the screen. By default, the application sets its current location as a starting point. If you want to select another location, touch "Your location" and enter the name of the city;

Step 2. Next, choose the name of the destination city and perform the search. Be sure to select the route by car to see the distance between cities by road. The mileage will be displayed at the bottom of the screen, as well as the estimated time;

Step 3. To measure the distance in a straight line, touch the name of the city on the map, and then click again on the name of the city at the bottom of the screen;

Step 4. Then go to "Measure distance" and position the second point on the target city. The straight distance will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. The time is not indicated, as it is not known the means of transport nor the route to be used.

On the pc

Step 1. Open Google Maps and use the search to find the destination city. Then click on "Routes";
